iMAL: major upgrade in progress

iMAL enters an important transition period! 30 Quai des Charbonnages will undergo major renovation works, with the opening in November 2019 of a new and spacious centre for digital arts and cultures. This evolution will of course be accompanied by a major reflection on our programme, objectives, visual identity, website, and more… in accordance to our new spaces!

To allow us to focus on this challenging but exciting future, we are planning a lighter programme in 2018-2019, including off-site activities.

We’ll keep you posted on these events, as well as our progress through our new, temporary homepage (designed by Luuse & Ivan Murit) and our social networks pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The renovation work is made possible through the CASTII.be project supported by the Brussels Region and the European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020.

Ways of Connecting

An exhibition with Evan Roth, Raphaël Bastide & Louise Drulhe

24.04.19

17.05.19

The exhibition places in conversation two pieces that reveal and translate in new forms the infrastructures and mechanisms underlying our connected environment. They are also related by their use of P2P web technologies, an alternative to the currently dominating model of centralised web.

Red Lines, by Evan Roth, is an online synchronised viewing experience of contemplative videos that evoke critical points of the internet infrastructure.
Renaming the Web, by Raphaël Bastide and Louise Drulhe is an installation illustrating the structure and fragility of the peer-to-peer computer network that forms it.

Tunnel Hearing

An a/v performance by Alexandra Dementieva & JJ Duerinckx

25.04.19

Tunnel Hearing is a live performance and video piece in which sound and image produce each other reciprocally, both in a metaphorical and very literal sense. The mysterious quality of the relation between the two persists even when the physical basis for their interaction becomes established in the mind’s ear and eye of the audience. Thus sound becomes a flicker of light and shadow a shift of timbre.

In collaboration with and in the framework of Festival des Nuits du Beau Tas 2019.

Location : Le Lac, 36 Rue de Witte de Hælen / 1000 Brussels

Video Game for Art

An introduction to the Godot engine

27.10.18

28.10.18

Godot is a libre videogame engine, a complete tool for creating videogames and interactive experiences.

During this two-days workshop, you will discover the potential of Godot ! Through a series of small demos, you will get familiar with the various aspects of real-time 3D projects : importing objects; creating materials; managing lighting and cameras; and introducing interactivity with scripting !

This workshop will focus on using these tools in an artistic context, in particular through the OSC protocol. OSC will allow Godot to communicate with other softwares more commonly used in the field of digital art, like SuperCollider, Puredata, IanniX, and more !

This workshop is lead by artist/developer/educator François Zajéga.

Ways beyond the post-Internet

#LAYERS debate at Art Brussels

20.04.18

20.04.18

In the framework of the #LAYERS exhibition, a debate with : Yves Bernard (curator), Peter Beyls (artist), Josephine Bosma (net art theorist), Constant Dullaart (artist), Valérie Hasson-Benillouche (Gallery Charlot), Hampus Lindwall (art collector), Fabio Paris (curator), Domenico Quaranta (curator, art critic and theorist), Carlo Zanni (artist).

Borrowing its title from the (in)famous launch of the Post-internet label at the DLD (Digital Life Design) conference in 2012 (the round table “Ways Beyond the Internet”, introduced by Hans Ulrich Obrist), this panel wants to explore recent developments in the field of media art.

Now that a broader aknowledgment that we are living in an age shaped by digital technologies has taken place, that “digital aware art” has found its way in the global art world and market in stable, material, post-digital forms, what’s emerging in terms of æsthetics, pœtics, formal choices, politics and economics ?

Thanks for all, dear Bram

04.04.18

It's with great sadness that we learn of the sudden passing of Bram Crevits, this 1st April 2018. Bram has been collaborating with iMAL for several years, as a curator for our Showcase exhibitions, and for our two latest international symposiums in 2016 and 2017. These could have never happened without his vision, intelligence, open-mindedness and generosity.

A new joint project was underway for 2018. iMAL extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends.

A new centre for iMAL !

Press conference

20.09.17

This morning, a press conference was held at iMAL to announce our ambitious plans for creating new infrastructures in our current building along the canal, at 30 Koolmijnenkaai / Quai des Charbonnages, in Molenbeek. Thanks to the support of the European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020, the Brussels-Capital Region and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation we will be able to carry out our CASTII (Centre Arts, Sciences, Technologies, Innovations & Inclusion) project, in collaboration with our two partners LES asbl & House of Cultures and Social Cohesion of the Molenbeek municipality.

The architecture project, designed by the bureaux Central (Brussels) & NP2F (Paris), plans to double the current surface from 600 m2 to more than 1200 m2. This will allow us to create new exhibition and public spaces; a more spacious FabLab equipped with cutting-edge tools; and artists’ residency facilities. iMAL’s new centre will cover 3 floors, from the ground floor to the second floor !

The renovation works are expected to take a whole year, starting by the end of 2017. During these, we will develop a programme of activities (exhibition, workshops, masterclasses, …), at external locations, and in collaboration with other organisations.

Our FabLab.iMAL will remain open, at its current location, on the first floor, during the renovation works, and until the opening of the new centre.

iMAL, Center for Digital Cultures and Technology

iMAL was created in 1999, with the objective to support artistic forms and creative practices using contemporary technologies as their medium.

In 2007, iMAL opened its new venue in the heart of Brussels, a Centre for Digital Cultures and Technology, followed by the opening in 2012 of the FabLab.iMAL, a creative workshop for digital fabrication.

Thanks to a support from the European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020 (ERDF) in the context of the CASTII project iMAL will soon double its infrastructure next to the Brussels Canal and plans to reopen in the spring of 2019 as a center where art, science, technology, innovation and inclusion meet. With this new center iMAL wants to formulate a response to a rapidly evolving digital society. The center not only provides space for (inter) national art practices that use, challenge and question innovative processes but will also be a place where technological developments and creativity are shared with a local community in the context of social inclusion.
